Enabling research excellence, and finding ways to solve the biggest problems for global good.

Sydney Informatics Hub

A Core Research Facility of The University of Sydney.

We are:

  • ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ป Data scientists ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป
  • ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป Software engineers ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ป
  • ๐Ÿงฌ Bioinformaticians ๐Ÿงฌ
  • ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ High performance computing experts โ˜๏ธ
  • ๐Ÿค– Machine learning engineers ๐Ÿค–

And together we work towards -

Enabling excellence in data and compute intensive research

We provide support, training, and expertise in research data management, statistics, data science, software engineering, simulation, visualisation, bioinformatics, and research computing.

We've:

  • Built an open source platform for annotated plant images to support the democratisation of visual AI in the agricultural industry ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿค–โ€Š๐Ÿง‘โ€๐ŸŒพโ€Š
  • Developed state of the art open source visual AI models for detecting and identifying wildlife in camera trap images ๐Ÿ“ธโ€Š๐ŸฆŠโ€Š๐Ÿจ
  • Created reusable workflows for bioinformatics on Australia's national supercompute resources & commercial cloud ๐Ÿ”ฌโ€Š๐Ÿงฌโ€Š
  • Optimised code for simulating plate tectonics, to better understand how our Earth forms! ๐ŸŒโ€Š๐ŸŒ‹โ€Š
  • Used machine learning models and echocardiogram data to improve cardiology diagnostics ๐Ÿฉบโ€Š๐Ÿฉปโ€Š๐Ÿฉโ€Š
  • Collaborated with the Australian Institute of Criminology to detect changepoints in organised criminal behabiour in response to changes in legislation ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธโ€Š๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธโ€Š๐Ÿ๏ธ
  • Modelled so many different soil attributes at high spatial resolution, so that farmers can make better decisions ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ๐ŸŒฑโ€Š๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿฟโ€๐ŸŒพ
  • Engineered a pipeline enabling radioastronomers to detect variables and slow transients using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder ๐Ÿ“กโ€Š๐ŸŒžโ€Š๐ŸŒŒ

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Find out more about the many ways we have enabled research and the exciting things we are working on at our website & public facing GitHub.
